Job Summary
The Laboratory Technician will support research activities by performing routine diagnostic tests, processing and analyzing biological samples, and ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and quality of laboratory data. The role requires strict adherence to laboratory protocols, biosafety standards, and research ethics to support ongoing institutional research projects.
Key Responsibilities
Collect biological samples, including blood and urine, from study participants in accordance with approved protocols.
Process and prepare samples for analysis through centrifugation, preservation, and appropriate handling methods.
Ensure accurate labeling, secure storage, and proper transportation of samples to maintain integrity and traceability.
Conduct routine diagnostic tests, including urinalysis, full hemogram, VDRL/STI testing (GeneXpert), and other relevant assays.
Perform preliminary laboratory analyses and communicate findings to the research team in a timely manner.
Maintain accurate laboratory logs, records, and electronic data capture systems.
Ensure confidentiality and integrity of laboratory data and study documentation.
Work collaboratively with research staff to coordinate sample collection, storage, and transfers.
Adhere strictly to laboratory safety, biosafety, and quality assurance protocols.
Stay updated on advancements in laboratory diagnostics and research methodologies.
Prepare and submit timely reports on laboratory activities, progress, and challenges.
Requirements
Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology.
Valid laboratory technologist license issued by the relevant regulatory body in Kenya.
Experience & Skills
At least two (2) years of experience in a clinical or research laboratory setting.
Proficiency in routine laboratory diagnostic techniques.
Experience using electronic or tablet-based data collection systems such as REDCap or ODK.
Familiarity with research ethics and good clinical laboratory practices.
Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and data integrity.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Fluency in English and Swahili; knowledge of local community languages is an added advantage.
