General Requirements for All Applicants
To be considered, you must meet the following conditions:
- Citizenship: You must be a Kenyan citizen with a valid National ID.
- Documents: Carry original and four (4) photocopies of your ID, KRA PIN, and academic certificates.
- Age:
- 18–26 years for GSO Cadets and General Duty Recruits.
- Up to 30 years for Specialist Officers and Tradesmen/women.
- Up to 39 years for Chaplains/Imams.
- Conduct: No criminal record.
- Physical Standards:
- Height: Men – 1.60m (5ft 3in), Women – 1.52m (5ft).
- Weight: Men – 54.55kg, Women – 50kg.
- BMI below 30.
- Female candidates must not be pregnant during recruitment or training.
- Medical: Must be medically fit according to KDF standards.
- Experience: Specialist Officers and Tradesmen/women need at least 2 years’ work experience after registration with the relevant professional body.
Academic Qualifications
General Service Officer (GSO) Cadets – Regular
- KCSE mean grade B (Plain), with at least C+ in English, Mathematics, and one Science subject.
- Training lasts 3 years, leading to a BSc in Defence and Security Studies.
GSO Cadets – Graduate
- Same requirements as GSO Regular.
- Must hold a Bachelor’s degree in approved fields.
- Training takes 15 months.
Specialist Officers
- Must meet the GSO requirements.
- Hold a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline and be registered with a statutory body (where applicable).
- Chaplains/Imams: KCSE C+ plus theological qualifications.
- Training period: 6 months.
General Duty Recruits
- Minimum KCSE mean grade D (Plain).
- NYS graduates who meet the conditions get an advantage.
Tradesmen/women
- Diploma holders: KCSE mean grade C (Plain) + relevant Diploma or higher.
- Certificate holders (Artisans): KCSE D+ (Plus) + relevant Trade Test Grade II or Craft II certificate.
Defence Forces Constables
- Retired KDF Members: Age 30–55, minimum 9 years of service, honourable discharge, and “Good” conduct rating.
- Retired NYS Members: Age 35–45, discharged with “Good” conduct.

Application Process
If you’re applying as a GSO Cadet (Regular or Graduate), Specialist Officer, or Tradesman/woman, you must apply online only through the official portal:
- Deadline for online applications: 12th October 2025
- Shortlisted candidates: Will be published in print media between 21st–24th October 2025
- Note: Only online applications will be considered.
For General Duty Recruits and Defence Forces Constables, recruitment will happen physically at designated centres across the country. The official KDF teams from the Kenya Army, Kenya Air Force, and Kenya Navy will conduct the exercise. The full itinerary will be shared separately.
